April Events at Tacoma Art Museum

EXHIBITIONS:

8th Northwest Biennial
Through May 6, 2007

Tacoma Art Museum’s 8th Northwest Biennial is a mile-marker of the region’s recent artistic trends over the last two years. The juried show presents and appraises a broad spectrum of recent artistic activities throughout the Northwestern states: Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Montana. Forty-one individual artists were selected from nearly 900 portfolio submissions to participate in the exhibition through a collaborative jury by David Kiehl, Curator of Prints at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, and Rock Hushka, Curator of Contemporary and Northwest Art at Tacoma Art Museum.

This exhibition is organized by Tacoma Art Museum. The 8th Northwest Biennial is generously sponsored by Mellon and The Paul G. Allen Family Foundation.

Paul Strand Southwest
Through May 23, 2007

Paul Strand is a seminal figure in the history of photography. Strand first journeyed to the Southwest in 1926. In New Mexico, Strand created images that spoke to the harmony of land and sky that he then pursued for the rest of his career. This exhibition presents many images for the first time as they are drawn from the artist's estate. They include dramatic landscapes, decayed ghost towns, the noble architecture of adobe churches, and his austere portraits of his wife, Rebecca.

The exhibition is organized by the Aperture Foundation. Local support is generously provided by The Paul G. Allen Family Foundation.

Frida Kahlo: Images of an Icon and Northwest Visions of Frida Kahlo
Through June 10, 2007

Frida Kahlo: Images of an Icon presents some sixty photographic portraits of Mexican artist Frida Kahlo throughout her life. Beginning with childhood, these images bring into focus the painter, the patient, the wife, the daughter, the lover, and the friend. Some of these photographs mask as much as they reveal about the woman who described herself as "la gran ocultadora," the great concealer. Many images provide a glimpse of the woman behind the façade, others allow a view into one of the most intriguing of Frida’s creations: the construction of her self-image. The exhibition includes work by Edward Weston, Imogen Cunningham, Lucienne Bloch, Emmy Lou Packard, Florence Arquin, Manuel Alvarez Bravo, Giselle Freund, Fritz Henle, Guillermo Kahlo, Nickolas Muray, and Lola Alvarez Bravo.

Northwest Visions of Frida Kahlo is a companion exhibition that features the work of Northwest artists who have been inspired by Kahlo, the artist and icon. Several of these artists are originally from Mexico and see Frida as a symbol of a strong and vibrant Mexico. Others are interested in exploring her celebrity status as an icon of popular culture.  Existing and newly created artwork by Randy Hayes, Alfredo Arreguin, Jim Riswold, Isaac Hernandez Ruiz, Fulgencio Lazo, and others will show Kahlo’s continued influence in today’s contemporary art.

Frida Kahlo: Images of an Icon is organized by Throckmorton Fine Art, New York. Local support is generously provided by Helen and Peter Bing and The Paul G. Allen Family Foundation. Northwest Visions of Frida Kahlo is organized by Tacoma Art Museum.

Telling Stories: Selections from the Permanent Collection

Through Autumn 2008
This thematic selection from Tacoma Art Museum’s permanent collection explores how artists capture the spirit and essence of narrative tales. Following closely the narrative structure of stories, themes include character (portraiture), setting (landscape and still life), and plot development and resolution (figurative works).

The exhibition is organized by Tacoma Art Museum. Local support is generously provided by Robert Half International.

How to Be Modern, How to Be Political

Abstract Expressionism: The American Sublime
Tuesday, April 10

New Dada, Pop and Op: The American Mundane
Tuesday, April 17

The mass market culture of the 1950s and ‘60s became not only the subject matter for artists like Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, Andy Warhol, and Claes Oldenburg, but its objects became the actual material
of their art.

New Realism, Minimal and Conceptual, and Minimalism
Tuesday, April 24

By the end of the twentieth century, artists such as Donald Judd and Agnes Martin had distilled the world to its most basic formal elements: color, shape, and structure. Winter/Spring Exhibitions at Tacoma Art Museum

Paul Strand Southwest
January 27 – May 23, 2007
Paul Strand is a seminal figure in the history of photography.

Frida Kahlo: Images of an Icon
February 3 – June 10, 2007
Images of an Icon offers a means of seeing Frida Kahlo’s world through the eyes of those who surrounded her. Modern masters of the camera such as Lucienne Bloch, Emmy Lou Packard, Florence Arquin, and Manuel Alvarez Bravo, as well as leading photojournalists such as Giselle Freund, Bernard Silberstein, and Fritz Henle captured her in their lenses. Kahlo’s relatives, lovers, and friends, including Guillermo Kahlo, Nickolas Muray, and Lola Alvarez Bravo were witness to a more intimate Frida. The images span Kahlo’s life and follow the artist from precocious child to famous artist. They permit a look into her bedroom, a seat at her table, a visit to her hospital room, a stroll through her garden, and a view into her collections. There is an ancillary component to the exhibition featuring the work of Northwest artists who have been inspired by Kahlo, the artist and icon.

8th Northwest Biennial
February 10 – May 6, 2007
Tacoma Art Museum’s 8th Northwest Biennial provides a strong assessment of the region’s recent art production. The juried show presents and appraises a broad spectrum of recent artistic activities, including artist-led projects such as Core Sample in Portland in 2003; successful shows in commercial galleries, alternative spaces, and museums; and other publications, performances, and installations. Artists working in a broad variety of media, including conceptual, digital media, ceramic, fiber, glass, Internet-based projects, small-scale installation, jewelry, mixed media, painting, performance, photography, printmaking, sculpture, video, and works on paper are considered. Individual artists are invited to participate in the exhibition through a collaborative jury by David Kiehl, Curator of Prints at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, and Rock Hushka, Curator of Contemporary and Northwest Art at Tacoma Art Museum.

Dale Chihuly Collection
Permanent installation
This permanent display of glass artworks by Tacoma native Dale Chihuly is the premier collection of the artist’s work on public long-term display. The collection dates 1977 to the present, and features examples from many of the artist’s major series, including Baskets, Sea Forms, Cylinders, Macchia, Persians, and Venetians.
