Roy Lichtenstein: American Indian Encounters
May 13 – September 4, 2006
Roy Lichtenstein: American Indian Encounters features an extraordinary selection of virtually unknown works by Roy Lichtenstein (1923 - 1997), one of the best-known American artists to emerge after 1960. It will bring together paintings, prints, drawings, and sculptures, including a rare sketchbook of American Indian design motifs. This exhibition juxtaposes two lesser-known periods of Lichtenstein's art, the Cubist abstractions based on 19th century American history paintings of Native American themes, and the "Amerindian" Pop-style works from 1979 to 1981.
The Essence of Line: French Drawing from Ingres to Degas
June 10 – September 17, 2006
For the first time, the renowned collections of nineteenth-century French drawings from the Baltimore Museum of Art and the Walters Art Museum combine for this special exhibition. With only three stops on the national tour, Tacoma is fortunate to be the only venue west of the Mississippi presenting this extraordinary cache of art. The Essence of Line features more than 100 rarely-shown drawings and watercolors by some of the most influential French artists of the nineteenth-century, including Eugene Delacroix, Honoré Daumier, Paul Cézanne, and Edgar Degas. From revealing preparatory sketches to beautiful finished watercolors, these works illuminate the range of French art over the course of a century of innovation.
Between Clouds of Memory: The Ceramic Art of Akio Takamori
June 10 – October 8, 2006
This exhibition presents a twenty-five-year mid-career survey exhibition of one of the country's leading ceramic artists. Born in Japan, Takamori incorporates his heritage in the style and content of his large-scale figurative ceramic sculpture. A marriage of Western and non-Western influences, he uses black-line drawing, reminiscent of Japanese woodblock prints, and calligraphy coupled with an intense interest in the human form. The artist currently heads the ceramic program at University of Washington in Seattle.
Neddy Artist Fellowship 2006
May 20 – August 13, 2006
The Neddy Artist Fellowship was established in 1995 as a memorial to Robert E. (Ned) Behnke (1948–89). The Behnke family and the Behnke Foundation sought to honor Ned’s contributions to the Northwest artistic community by awarding the Fellowship to artists who demonstrate artistic excellence, innovation, unique vision, and a passionate commitment to their art and community. Tacoma Art Museum will show the work of this year’s nominees.
