Raphael Lemkin Lecture

Raphael Lemkin Lecture on the Holocaust and GenocideDoris Bergen, the chancellor Rose and Ray Wolfe professor of Holocaust Studies at the University of Toronto, will deliver the sixth annual Raphael Lemkin Lecture titled “Why Study the Holocaust?” Bergen’s research focuses on issues of religion, gender and ethnicity in the Holocaust and World War II. She is the author of “Twisted Cross: The German Christian Movement in the Third Reich” and “War and Genocide: A Concise History of the Holocaust.”

“L'Orfeo” by Claudio Monteverdi

PLU’s Opera Workshop and Early Music Ensemble will join forces for a collaborative production marking the 400th anniversary of Claudio Monteverdi’s “L’Orfeo,” which depicts the ageless story of Orpheus as he travels to the underworld to rescue his beloved, Eurydice. International early music stars Stephen Stubbs and Maxine Eilander will provide music direction for the performance, with choreography by Anna Mansbridge and stage direction by Jim Brown.

Visiting Writer Series: A reading by Michael Dumanis
Poet Michael Dumanis will read from his first poetry collection, “My Soviet Union,” which won the Juniper Prize in Poetry for 2006. Dumanis was born in the former Soviet Union and lived there until his parents were granted political asylum in the United States. The narrator of the poems in his collection hails from a country that, like the Soviet Union, no longer exists.
