January 20, 2005
The Puyallup Planning Commission is beginning a community-wide effort to update the City's 17-year-old shoreline master program. This master program, which is required by State law, establishes community goals, policies, and regulations for areas abutting the Puyallup River and Clarks Creek. This update is being funded by a grant from the Washington Department of Ecology. The project is expected to extend through 2005, with City Council adoption of the updated shoreline master program expected in early 2006. A community open house will be held Wednesday, January 26, 2005, at the Puyallup City Library (324 South Meridian). Maps of the City's shorelines, boards, handouts, and surveys will be available, as well as the opportunity to speak with City and consultant staff, as well as City Planning Commissioners about shoreline concerns. The public is encouraged to attend to provide comment on how best to manage the City's shorelines. At 7:15 p.m., staff will make a brief presentation about the project and findings to date. The Planning Commission meeting will follow the public meeting, at approximately 8:00 p.m. The update of the master program is made necessary by recent changes in state requirements for shoreline master programs, as well as to incorporate current knowledge about shoreline processes and how to protect shorelines resources, while addressing the needs of adjacent properties. Several community meetings will be held in 2005 by the City Planning Commission to receive public comment on shoreline management and the shoreline master program as it progresses. For information about future meetings for the shoreline master program update, please sign up for email updates, and review the project's status and draft master program elements on the City's website (www.ci.puyallup.wa.us). Questions about the project may be directed to Nancy Eklund, Senior Planner, at 253/841-5462, (nancye@ci.puyallup.wa.us) . |
