Mass-casualty exercise to be held Feb. 23 at Fairgrounds

Puyallup fire apparatus and police cars will be responding to a mock terrorist attack at the Puyallup Fairgrounds on Wednesday morning, February 23 during a countywide mass-casualty exercise. "It's a simulated Puyallup Fair opening day scenario where mock terrorists will release simulated weapons of mass destruction," said Puyallup Fire Chief Merle Frank.

The homeland security exercise, named "Cascade Resolve 05," is being conducted by Pierce County Emergency Management in coordination with Pierce County public safety agencies. Participants will include seven hospitals, 17 fire departments, six law enforcement agencies, three dispatch centers, Pierce Transit, American Medical Response, the Puyallup Fair, Fort Lewis, Madigan Army Medical Center and the Washington National Guard.

"We don't want residents to be alarmed when they hear the sirens and see fire trucks and police cars responding to the fairgrounds," said Puyallup Police Chief Robin James. "Members of our Police Explorers have been warning downtown residents that the exercise will take place so that they won't be surprised."
