Hundreds of Washington’s top academic students
honored this spring
Hundreds of Washington’s
top academic students were honored this spring in special in-state
ceremonies
to celebrate
their
academic abilities.
The students participated in a national talent search sponsored by
the Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth (CTY). Founded
in
1979, CTY identifies
America’s top students in grades two through eight and provides programs,
services, and resources to help them make the most of their special abilities.
(CTY’s web site: www.cty.jhu.edu)
These very bright young people were invited to participate in CTY’s Talent
Search because they scored at the 97th percentile or higher on school standardized
tests. They then took additional above-grade-level exams, which yielded further
information about the verbal and mathematical reasoning abilities of these
bright learners.
Seventh and eighth graders who took the college SAT and scored approximately
in the top 25 percent compared to all students in the search are being recognized
at Awards Ceremonies. Fifth and sixth graders who took the PLUS Academic Abilities
Assessment and scored approximately in the top 34 percent are honored at Celebrations
of Talent. Both ceremonies recognized students who scored in the top 19 percent
students taking CTY’s Spatial Test Battery (STB), a test assessing spatial
reasoning.
Patricia Owen, Director of CTY’s Talent Search, credits schools for helping
to make families aware of Hopkins’ programs. “School counselors,
principals, and others who encourage participation clearly are advocates for
academic excellence, and we join the children’s families in expressing
our thanks to them for expanding the academic opportunities of Washington’s
brightest youth,” she said.
Ceremonies were held at St. Martin's College in Lacey on May 11; Eastern Washington
University in Cheney on May 17; and the University of Washington in Seattle on
June 1. Over 84,000 students from 19 states and the District of Columbia participated
in the talent searches offered in 2003 through CTY.
