The latest series of recalls only highlights the need for natural dog food and natural cat food alternatives. These recipes are a great alternative to store-bought food.
You can feed these recipes to dogs and cats alone, or mixed with dry or wet pet food.

Rice and Lentils Pilaf meal for dogs

This meal is not only a great meal for your pet, it's also a fantastic alternative to flea collars, store-bought de-wormers and more.
(Please note: I've removed the onion and garlic from this recipe. There are conflicting reports as to whether onion and garlic are harmful to dogs, so it's best to be safe. As always, ask your vet before trying anything new with your pet).

This natural dog food recipe isn't for cats, but some people like it... :)

Ingredients:
2 cups uncooked brown rice
1 cup uncooked lentils
1 tsp fresh chopped thyme
1 tsp chopped parsley (optional, if you or your dog don't like the garlic smell)
1 tsp vegetable oil or olive oil
1/4 cup nuts (walnuts, pecans, almonds, etc.)
1/4 cup crushed unsalted sunflower seeds
1-2 carrots (optional)
6-12 oz. green beans (optional)
5 cups water

If your pet has worms, add a clove of garlic (for large dogs), but do not put it in every time. Long-term use of garlic may harm dogs.

These ingredients are just what I use. You can substitute ingredients, your dog won't complain. I sometimes add chunks of ham, steak or hamburger in also, but not if you are de-worming.

Directions:
In a skillet, saute' thyme, nuts and seeds in oil for 2-3 minutes.
In another pot, bring water to a boil. Add rice and lentils, stir well and then return to a boil. Add saute' ed mixture to rice and lentils. Cover and simmer 30-45 minutes.
After cooking is done, add chopped carrots and beans.
Should make 7 cups, good for a few meals (we combine this 1/2 and 1/2 with regular dog food).
